Man charged with blackmail over alleged data breach of club patrons

A Sydney man has been charged with blackmail over alleged threats to share the personal information from more than 1 million patron records of multiple clubs in NSW and ACT in a reported data breach.

Detectives arrested a 46-year-old man after they executed a search warrant at a Fairfield West home on Thursday afternoon.

He has been charged with demand with menaces intend obtain gain/cause loss.

The man was granted conditional bail and is expected to appear at Fairfield Local Court on June 12.

An unauthorised website published some personal information of patrons who signed-in using their drivers licences at some clubs across NSW and ACT, with a threat to reveal more.

Senior government figures, including Premier Chris Minns and Deputy Premier Prue Car, had their names in the database.

Personal details possibly released included people's club membership details and drivers licence details after they were allegedly stolen from a third-party IT provider used by the clubs.

Detectives launched an investigation into the reported leak in conjunction with state and federal agencies under Strike Force Division.

The investigation into the alleged data breach is ongoing.

ID Support NSW said it would assist customers impacted by the incident.

"We are concerned about the potential impact on individuals and urge clubs and hospitality venues to notify patrons whose information is affected," it said in a statement on Thursday.

"ID Support NSW is also available to help those affected reduce their risk of identity theft following this incident."

ClubsNSW urged all club members to watch out for scams and avoid clicking on links in suspicious or unknown emails and texts.
