Defence analysts say the Albanese government needs to stop shying away from a "frightening discussion" about how civilians and local industry would be mobilised to support Australia's war effort in the event of a major conflict breaking out.

The National Defence Strategy released this week focuses heavily on preparing the military to help Australia withstand Chinese coercion, amid rising fears of hostilities between China and the US.
