New Queensland top cop says policing is 'in his blood'

Queensland's new police commissioner Steve Gollschewski wants residents to be safe and feel safe.

Gollschewski previously led the police response during the COVID-19 pandemic, including hotel quarantine oversight, airport security and border security on roads.

Gollschewski was the state's most experienced deputy commissioner, with over a decade in the role, and more than 40 years experience as a police officer.

The new commissioner said policing "is in my blood" as the son of a police officer and a member of the force.

"Policing has been part of my life," he said.

"My father was a police officer before I was born, my brother was a police officer and I've been in the organisation for 44 years.

"The QPS is a growing organisation with new and varied challenges on the horizon, however, our people are incredibly committed and we will continue to build on our achievements while delivering high-quality services.

"Our primary focus is about ensuring the community is safe and feels safe while also making sure our workforce is supported and feels supported."
