An armed gang has attempted to storm a Melbourne home during a Facebook Marketplace ambush, with the victim so shaken he has decided to leave the state.

Julian Rivers-Smith was immediately on edge when the would-be buyer arrived at his Ascot Vale home wearing a face mask and attempted to use a fake bank site to prove he had the funds to buy a laptop when they met in late March.

Rivers-Smith claimed the buyer was armed with a knife and began to make threats, saying: "I'm telling you right now, bro, I have your address."

An accomplice used a metal bar to smash Rivers-Smith's car windows, he said, and the gang fled in a Ford Falcon, but not before threatening to return.

"(It has) weighed heavy on my mind since the entire incident because obviously, they haven't been apprehended," the victim said.

It's not the first time the 33-year-old has been targeted — and he's fed up.

In December, one of his cars was allegedly stolen by a teenager.

"It's made me not want to live in Victoria anymore," Rivers-Smith said. "I'm leaving the state literally over crime. Nothing else."

The main suspect is believed to be a teenager. Police are investigating, but are yet to make any arrests.

Victoria's Chief Police Commissioner last month called for an urgent re-think on youth crime laws in the state, saying we have "a significant issue".

Data shared by the Crime Statistics Agency in March showed the total number of criminal incidents recorded by Victoria Police in 2023 (385,782) had spiked 10.6 per cent on the previous year.
