'They beat us at our own game': Fyfe on Derby upset

To some local footy news now and the Fremantle Dockers have announced forward Jye Amiss will miss this weekend's clash with the Bulldogs under concussion protocols after copping a heavy knock to the head early in the first quarter at the weekend's derby.

Speaking to the media this afternoon, midfielder Nat Fyfe said the team had just finished reviewing Saturday's shock loss to the Eagles, saying West Coast "beat us at our own game".

"[It was] a disappointing loss, but we seem to think that's not reflective of how our season's been going," he said.

"Derbies are always scrutinised a little bit higher, particularly ones where there's an expectation that you're going to win, so I understand that things are a bit magnified at the moment.

"We'll look to take the learnings and move on quick."

Meanwhile, across town Eagles co-captain Liam Duggan fronted a chirpier press conference.

"It's been a good couple of weeks for us," he said.

"It's been nice, a great reward for some of the efforts over the last, you could probably say 2½ years, but definitely this pre-season and early on in the season.

"Really happy for some of our young blokes to experience a couple of weeks of success in a row."

The Dockers have dropped to 9th on the AFL ladder after three losses in a row, while the Eagles have lifted to 14th.

Human skull found in North West

A human skull has been discovered near a remote Aboriginal community in WA's North West.

A WA Police spokesman confirmed the remains were found by a member of the public on Saturday at a Beagle Bay fishing spot on the Dampier Peninsula.

Officers attended the location in company with a Nyul Nyul ranger.

It's understood the skull, found on a beach, may have become exposed by recent high tides.

Images of the skull have been sent to a forensic anthropologist for an opinion in relation to its age.

Police inquiries are ongoing.

Beagle Bay is a remote Aboriginal community with around 300 residents.

Yanchep rail extension opening date announced

By Hamish Hastie

Premier Roger Cook has just announced that Metronet's Yanchep railway line extension will officially open to the public on Monday, July 15.

Despite being 2½ years later than first promised, Cook said the 14.5 kilometres of new track would service Perth's growing outer northern suburbs.

"Alkimos and Eglinton were WA's largest growth areas last year, and Metronet will be a game-changer for local residents - slashing travel time and connecting our northern suburbs to the rest of the city," he said.

The Yanchep line has been subject to significant cost blowouts from its original cost estimate of $531.7 million in 2017 to $1.08 billion.

It is the second Metronet line to open following the launch of the Perth Airport Line in 2022.

Truck driver jailed for 'couriering' $6 million in cash across border

Staying with the courts again where 9 News court reporter Ezra Holt is covering the sentencing of a long-haul truck driver who was offered $50,000 to transport millions in cash from Western Australia to New South Wales during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nathan Ferguson, 54, was arrested in Coolgardie in November 2020 after an X-ray of his truck's cargo revealed two large sums of cash totalling $13 million hidden in a water tank and sports bag.

He had previously received special permission to enter the state days earlier, claiming on his G2G application that he was transporting essential freight.

During his sentencing in Perth District Court on Tuesday, Ferguson's lawyer said he had been in a "deep financial hole" when he accepted the job to transport what he thought was $6 million in cash.

However, he said his client was nothing more than a courier in what was described as an unsophisticated money laundering attempt.

State prosecutors could not say where the money had come from, only that it was proceeds of organised crime. The cash seizure was one of the biggest in Australian history.

Ferguson was jailed for three years and three months.

Pro-Putin Pilbara councillor survives no-confidence motion

By Cameron Myles

A no-confidence motion against a Pilbara councillor who made headlines last month for his glowing praise of Russia's elections has fallen flat.

Town of Port Hedland councillors gathered for a special council meeting on Monday night to vote on the motion of no confidence against councillor Adrian McRae.

Adrian McRae speaking in Russia.

McRae travelled to Moscow at his own expense earlier this year as part of an international delegation to scrutinise the Russian elections, which delivered President Vladimir Putin 87.8 per cent of the vote - the highest-ever result in Russia's post-Soviet history.

The Port Hedland councillor then appeared in a video on Russia's Channel One State News congratulating Putin on his landslide victory, and later defended the elections as "ridiculously transparent".

Monday's no-confidence motion would "demonstrate to the Town of Port Hedland community that Cr McRae's public comments in relation to the Russian election are his own personal view and are not endorsed by the Town of Port Hedland Council", the meeting's agenda stated.

However, the motion was unsuccessful, with a majority of councillors backing in McRae, six votes to three.

McRae would have remained in council even if the motion had been successful, as there are no powers available to councils to remove councillors from office under the Local Government Act.

Port Hedland Mayor, Peter Carter told 6PR on Tuesday morning he brought the motion because he believed "it was the right thing to do".

Defending his trip earlier this month, McRae said Russians were proud of their democracy, and that he worked as a scrutineer alongside representatives from US congress and cosmonauts from the International Space Station.

The Perth suburb where landlords haven't been able to increase rent for five years

A handful of suburbs have had near-negligible rent increases in the past five years and some even recorded price drops, despite Australia's widespread rental crisis.

Perth upmarket suburb Churchlands is a surprise inclusion on the list. According to Domain, the middle-ring suburb's median rent has dropped to $700 a week, down 12.5 per cent compared to a year ago.

Meanwhile, a rental affordability snapshot report, released by Anglicare today, showed there is not a single property for rent in WA that someone on Jobseeker or Youth Allowance could afford, with Perth's average rent price reaching a record high of $650 a week.
