Central Hastings OPP have laid attempted murder charges after three people suffered serious stab wounds in Madoc Township.

Police say the incident happened between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday on McCann Road in Eldorado when a man was travelling to the area via a taxi.

It's alleged that the car driver, a 59-year-old man, was assaulted and suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver drove himself to a nearby gas station and was transported to a hospital in Kingston.

Two other people were also assaulted in their home. A 64-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries. The two were taken to hospital by Hastings-Quinte Paramedics.

The suspect is then said to have fled the scene in a stolen vehicle and was seen driving on Highway 62. He was arrested without incident.

Thirty-six-year-old Matthew Helm of Tweed is charged with the following:

  • Attempt to commit murder - three counts
  • Break and enter with the intent to commit an indictable offence
  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Mischief over $5000

The accused was remanded into custody and has a scheduled appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on May 2, 2024.

Investigators believe there was no safety risk to the general public during the incident.
