A 30-year-old man is dead and three suspects are wanted in what's being described as a violent home invasion inside an Etobicoke apartment building, Toronto police said.

Investigators say just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday three suspects forcibly entered an apartment in the Lake Shore Boulevard West and Long Branch Avenue area and demanded valuables. A struggle ensued and the victim was shot.

The victim was rushed to a trauma centre, where he later died from his injuries. He has been identified as Matthew Bergart of Toronto.

Police say Bergart was visiting a friend at their home at the time of the incident. The friend was uninjured in the shooting.

Toronto police believe the incident was targeted, but would not say if the suspects knew the victim.

Investigators say three suspects with face coverings and dressed in dark clothing fled the area in a white or light-coloured sedan southbound on Long Branch before turning westbound on Lake Shore Boulevard.

Bergart is the 25th homicide of the year - and one of three people killed in a 15 hour period across the GTA.
