Tweed man charged with three counts of attempted murder in Madoc Township stabbings

A Tweed man has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, break and enter, and more after a taxi driver and two other individuals suffered serious stab wounds in Madoc Township.

In a media release, Central Hastings OPP stated the the incident happened on Wednesday, Apr. 24, 2024, between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, on McCann Crescent in Eldorado.

The suspect reportedly travelled to the area by taxi and, upon arrival in Eldorado, the driver, a 59-year-old man, was assaulted and suffered life-threatening injuries.

The taxi driver was able to drive himself to a nearby gas station, and from there was then transported to hospital in Kingston, police shared.

According to the OPP, two other people — a man and woman aged 64 and 59 — were also assaulted at a home in connection with the same incident, resulting in life-threatening injuries. They were transported to hospital by Hastings-Quinte Paramedics.

According to police, the suspect fled the scene in a stolen vehicle; he was later located driving on Highway 62 and arrested without incident.

Matthew Helm, age 36, of Tweed, has been charged with:

• Three counts of attempting to commit murder
• Break and enter with the intent to commit an indictable offence
• Theft of a motor vehicle
• Mischief over $5,000

Charges have not been proven in court.

The accused was remanded in custody, with scheduled appearance before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on May 2.

"Investigators believe there was no safety risk to the general public during the incident," police stated.
