Grocery co-ops are quickly becoming a favourite choice of Canadians who want to make sure their money is going back into their local community.

With frustration growing over high food prices and profits in the grocery industry, some also see grocery co-ops as a better alternative.

Expert Jon Steinman says co-ops are often created out of necessity, such as in remote communities.

The set-up is member-owned, with most owned by customers who have a voting say in how the organization runs.
