A JD(U) leader was shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants in Punpun area on the outskirts of Bihar's Patna, police said on Thursday.

JD(U) leader Saurabh Kumar was killed and another person was injured after unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on them in the Masaurhi area, on the outskirts of Patna, late on Wednesday night.

Police said preliminary investigations suggested that the killing could be the result of 'personal enmity'.

According to Masaurhi police, Saurabh Kumar (40) and his friend Mummun Kumar were returning home after a wedding reception when they were shot at in the Parsa Bazar locality.

"We are investigating the case. It looks to be a case of personal enmity upon preliminary investigation," Masaurhi sub division officer Kanhaiya Kumar said.

Speaking to ANI, JD(U) Patna district leader Ashok Kumar said, "Last night at 9 PM, Saurabh and I were in the same reception party, after which I went to another party… Saurabh was not just a political person, he was socially very active… We have faith that the accused will soon be arrested…"

JD(U) spokesperson Nikhil Mandal said, "Saurabh Kumar had been associated with JD(U) since his student politics days."
