Sonakshi Sinha knows how to do a traditional weave with new-era relevance. The actor has been busy promoting Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directorial, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, and turning up in a plethora of statement-making occasion wear outfits. From lehengas to kurtas, she has been causing a stir with her looks that mirror her character in the Netflix period drama series. Giving a rain check to tried-and-tested saris, she recently showed up in an exquisite ebony Benarasi sari for an event.

From Raw Mango, the six-yard staple showcases a gorgeous charcoal shade—a refreshing departure from the usual primary shades we associate with traditional Varanasi saris. Per Sanjay Garg, the sari borrows influences from the indelible "Art Deco movement of the decorative arts and architecture that originated in the 1920s and developed into a major style during the 1930s." Short for the French Arts Décoratifs and sometimes referred to as style moderne, the style encompasses design scheme, architecture, decorative arts and fashion that is defined by sleek shapes, geometric forms and rich material palettes. This aesthetic is seamlessly translated on Sinha's Romuva silk brocade sari that features all-over geometric circular motifs in gold zari with a dense gold palla, along with the lines on the border.

This isn't the first time there's been an Art Deco renaissance in the fashion landscape. Time and again, designers across the world have tapped into the era with creative innovation and indulgence with exuberant energy. A memorable revisit to that era was Ralph & Russo's autumn/winter collection at Paris Haute Couture Week 2019, which celebrated linear patterns and an assortment of maximalist embellishments. The autumn/winter 2022 runways, in particular, epitomised Art Deco, which was manifested through the showcases by Lanvin, Saint Laurent and Erdem among many others. Armani Privé's autumn/winter 2023 haute couture show was also a beautiful exploration of Far Eastern Art Deco design.
