Actor Lara Dutta has reacted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent speech, in which he claimed that the Congress party had promised to distribute the nation's wealth among the Muslim population. While the veracity of the PM's claims has been debated, Lara Dutta praised him for sticking to his convictions. "At the end of the day, you have to stand by what your beliefs are," she said in an interview with Zoom Entertainment, while her co-actor in an upcoming streaming series, Jimmy Shergill, said that unpatriotic Indians need a 'reality check'.

Asked about the PM's speech, which he delivered at a rally in Rajasthan, Lara said, "We are all humans, at the end of the day. It is very difficult to keep all the people happy all the time. If we (actors) are not exempt from trolling, neither is the PM of this country. We all take that in our stride. You can't keep treading on egg-shells just because you don't want to upset one side or the other side. Somewhere down the line, you have to be true to what your truth is, what you believe in. And if he has the gumption to be able to do that, kudos. At the end of the day, you have to stand by what your beliefs are."

At the election rally, the PM had said in Hindi, "Earlier, when they (the Congress) were in power, they had said Muslims have the first right to the wealth of the nation. This means they will distribute this wealth to those who have more children, to infiltrators. Should your hard-earned money be given to infiltrators? Do you agree to this?" The PM was alluding to comments made by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2006. "We will have to devise innovative plans to ensure that minorities, particularly the Muslim minority, are empowered to share equitably in the fruits of development. They must have the first claim on resources," the former PM had said. The next day, the PMO also clarified that Singh's reference to 'first claim on resources' "refers to all the 'priority' areas… including programmes for the upliftment of SCs, STs, OBCs, women and children and minorities…"

Jimmy Shergill, who was present alongside Lara Dutta in the Zoom interview, said, "If you're born in this country, you're born with that patriotism. If you're not, then you have to do a reality check on yourself." The two actors are promoting their show Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond, which will be released on JioCinema on April 25.
