Prayagraj: Commemorating

World Hand Hygiene Day

(May 5), an event was held at the Microbiology department of Moti Lal Nehru Medical, Prayagraj on Monday.

World

Hand Hygiene

Day is observed on May 5 each year to promote hand hygiene and raise awareness about the importance of

washing hands

to prevent the spread of infections, including

COVID-19

and many other hospital acquired infections.

"Proper hand hygiene, particularly handwashing with soap and water, is one of the most effective ways to prevent the transmission of pathogens like bacteria and viruses from one person to another. It reduces Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) among patients and healthcare workers", informed Head of department Dr Reena Sachan.

The doctor said that if you cannot wash your hands with soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. To create awareness, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) provides a variety of materials, including posters, fact sheets, and videos, on handwashing and hand hygiene.

"Regular hand washing helps to prevent the spread of common illness, such as the flu and the common cold, in homes, schools, workplaces, and public places. It ultimately saves lives, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems", said Dr Sachan.
