Nestled amidst lush forests, Wayanad, a key constituency in Kerala, is all set to cast its votes on April 26 along with the rest of the state. Established as a separate electoral region in 1980, Wayanad comprises three municipal towns - Kalpetta, Mananthavady, and Sultan Bathery - and hosts three assembly constituencies. In a bid to retain his parliamentary seat, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is vying for victory in Wayanad for the second consecutive time. Standing against him are K Surendran, the BJP state president, and Annie Raja from the ruling Left party.

PAST VICTORIES AND CHALLENGES IN WAYANAD

Reflecting on previous elections, Congress leader M.I. Shanavas emerged victorious in Wayanad in 2009 and 2014. Despite Rahul Gandhi's substantial win in 2019, recent ground reports indicate a shift in voter sentiment.

While the Congress and CPI unite at the national level as part of the INDIA bloc, they face off in Kerala, with Congress under the United Democratic Front (UDF) and CPI within the Left Democratic Front (LDF). This internal opposition could impact both parties' vote shares.

The Bharatiya Janata Party's decision to field K Surendran underscores its determination to challenge Rahul Gandhi's stronghold in Wayanad.

With the stage set and campaigns underway, all eyes are on the fate of the three contestants, awaiting the election results on June 4.
