The Bible will not be made illegal in the US

Several far-right Republicans are objecting the Antisemitism Awareness Act claiming it would make the Bible illegal in the United States. This comes after the Congress passed a legislation, which would require the Department of Education to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism when an anti-discrimination law is enforced.

The proposal wa passed 320-91, with several Republicans voting along with the Democrats. In simple terms, the bil aims to cement the IHRA definition in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which is an anti-discrimination law that bars discrimination based on shared ancestry, ethnic characteristics or national origin.

"Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities," the definition reads.

The bill now heads to the Senate.

Several objected the bill, saying it will restrict free speech and broadens the definition of antisemitism by including "claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor." Conservatives said that the IHRA definition includes 'claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel', arguing that it could mean that parts of the Bible would now become "illegal."

However, this is not the case. The definition in the bill does mention that Jewish people were involved in killing Jesus as antisemitic, but it does not make the Bible illegal.

The proposal's text says that it would need the Education Department to "take into consideration the definition of antisemitism as part of the Department's assessment of whether the practice was motivated by antisemitic intent" when investigating antisemitic discrimination at colleges.

One will not be arrested for quoting the Bible.
