Shreyas Iyer's leadership prowess has been on full display in the ongoing IPL 2024 season as the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Guiding his team with skill and strategy, Iyer has led KKR to the top of the points table with an impressive string of victories, including a dominant win against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.

In their recent encounter, KKR secured a resounding 98-run victory over LSG, marking their eighth win of the season under Iyer's captaincy.

"Shreyas Iyer, unlike Hardik Pandya or Ravindra Jadeja has been groomed (as a captain). He has come through a system," Prasad said on RevSportz.

However, Iyer's potential as a leader was recognized long before his stint with KKR. Former BCCI selector MSK Prasad reminisced about identifying Iyer as the next big leader in Indian cricket. During his tenure as chief selector from 2016 to 2020, Prasad recalled observing Iyer's exceptional leadership skills, particularly during his time with the India A side. Under Iyer's captaincy, the team achieved positive results, showcasing his natural ability to lead.

"If you go back to the stats, in the last two years, when we were at the helm, Shreyas Iyer led the side (India A). I think out of the 10 series that India A played, we won 8. In the majority of those series, Shreyas led the side. He has been in and around as captain. He has been groomed for that particular slot," Prasad said.

Prasad further revealed that Iyer was earmarked as a potential successor to the likes of former Indian captain Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who currently leads the team across all formats.

"We felt that post Virat, post Rohit Sharma, you needed someone to lead the side that's when we started thinking about Shreyas Iyer or Rishabh Pant. But even ahead of Pant, was Iyer as a captain," he added.

Iyer's journey as a captain began with the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2018 when he took over the captaincy from Gautam Gambhir. Under his leadership, the franchise witnessed a remarkable turnaround in fortunes. Despite finishing at the bottom of the table in 2018, Iyer led the team to successive playoff appearances in the following seasons, progressively improving their league standings from 3rd to 2nd and eventually securing the top position in 2021.
