'Carry water bottles': Mumbai gets two heatwave warnings in two weeks as temperature set to spike

As Mumbai braces for another heatwave this weekend, officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the surge in high-rise buildings in Mumbai is trapping heat in the city for longer periods than usual. The Director of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai Sunil Kamble that temperature is likely to go up over the next few days. According to Mumbai-Santacruz weather station, the maximum temperature was 34.2 degrees in the past 24 hours while minimum 26.5 degrees. But it likely to rise to 39 degrees on 29th April.

The IMD has forecast a rise of 2-3 degrees in maximum temperatures very likely over Maharashtra during next 4-5 days.

Kamble advised, "Avoid sun exposure from 10 am to 4 pm. Remain hydrated and carry water bottles. You must approach the doctor if you feel discomfort."

The IMD official said that on days when Mumbai records above normal temperatures like was seen last week in the city, heat is seen getting trapped for a longer time. Last week, Mumbai saw daytime temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius, with the IMD declaring severe heatwave conditions in certain areas.

"But given that Mumbai's growth is primarily vertical owing to it being surrounded by the sea, it is difficult to control it," he said.

Heat wave warning

On Wednesday, the mercury soared to 42-44°C across various regions of Rayalaseema and parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal, with isolated areas experiencing similar temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Jharkhand. Temperatures ranged from 40-42°C over extensive areas of Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, and certain parts of Gujarat, with sporadic instances recorded in interior Karnataka, interior Maharashtra, West Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and West Uttar Pradesh.

These readings surpassed normal levels by 3-5°C across many parts of West Bengal & Sikkim, and in isolated pockets of Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.

There is a high probability of experiencing Heat Wave to severe heat wave conditions in numerous areas across Gangetic West Bengal, certain regions of Odisha, and sporadically in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal over the next five days. Additionally, Heat wave conditions are expected in isolated areas of Bihar, Jharkhand, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Interior Karnataka, and East Uttar Pradesh throughout the next five days, with West Uttar Pradesh likely to experience these conditions from the 26th to the 29th of April. Konkan is anticipated to face heat wave conditions from the 27th to the 29th of April.
