A plea in the Delhi High Court has sought direction to the Election Commission to develop a mechanism to ensure that arrested political leaders are allowed to campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The politicians may be allowed to campaign via video conferencing, the plea stated.

The plea was filed by a law student, in the wake of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest, in connection with the alleged irregularities in the liquor policy case.

The petitioner stated he was aggrieved by the timing of arrests of political leaders after the announcement of the Model Code of Conduct.

The plea also sought directions to the union to provide detailed information about the arrest of a political leader or a candidate immediately to the Election Commission.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money-laundering case linked to the Delhi government's now-scrapped excise policy.

He has been lodged in Tihar Jail number 2 since April 1.
