IMD heatwave alert: Check your state's forecast as maximum temperature in India soars to 46 degrees

Some parts of India continue to face severe heatwave this week as the maximum temperature touched 46 degrees, according to India Meteorological Department. For the week ended 24 April 2024, the prevailing heat wave conditions in the eastern regions of India marked the second occurrence of such intensity within this season, which notably escalated. Notably, Odisha and West Bengal experienced severe heat wave conditions, with Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu also witnessing heat wave conditions during specific dates. Additionally, Telangana and Saurashtra & Kutch encountered heat wave conditions on specific dates. This period of heat wave conditions in Odisha commenced on April 15 and in Gangetic West Bengal on April 17, respectively. On April 21, 2024, the highest maximum temperature of 46.0°C was recorded in Bharagora, district East Singhbhum, Jharkhand.

IMD forecast for Maximum Temperatures for week ended May 1, 2024

On Wednesday, maximum temperatures ranged between 42-44°C across various parts of Rayalaseema, with similar conditions observed in certain areas of Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal. Isolated pockets in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Jharkhand also experienced temperatures within this range. Moreover, temperatures ranged from 40-42°C across many parts of Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, with isolated pockets in Gujarat, and other regions. Additionally, maximum temperatures were notably above normal by 3-5°C in various parts of West Bengal & Sikkim, as well as in isolated pockets across Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam & Meghalaya, and other regions.

Expectations for the next two days indicate a rise of about 2°C in maximum temperatures across many parts of Northwest India, followed by a subsequent fall of 2-3°C for the following 3 days, and a subsequent rise of 2-4°C thereafter. Additionally, a rise of 2-3°C in maximum temperatures is expected over east India and Maharashtra during the first half of the week, with no significant change thereafter. However, minimal alterations in maximum temperatures are anticipated across the rest of the country throughout most days of the week.

Heat Wave Conditions Outlook

The prevalence of heat wave to severe heat wave conditions is expected in many places over Gangetic West Bengal, with some parts of Odisha and isolated pockets over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, according to IMD. Moreover, isolated pockets in Bihar, Jharkhand, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, and several other regions are likely to experience heat wave conditions throughout most days of the week. Hot and humid weather is also forecasted in Tripura, Kerala & Mahe, Coastal Karnataka, and various other regions during the majority of the week. Additionally, warm nights are expected in Odisha during April 27-29, 2024.





Forecast for Maximum Temperatures for Week (May 2 to May 8, 2024)

Anticipated maximum temperatures are likely to gradually rise across most parts of the country compared to the previous week, according to IMD. They are expected to be above normal by 2-4°C over east & northeast India, along the east coast, and many parts along the west coast. However, near-normal temperatures are expected in remaining parts of the country. Moreover, there is a moderate probability of heat wave over isolated/some pockets of several states during some days of the week. Additionally, hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over isolated pockets of Maharashtra & Karnataka Coast, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala during many days of the week.
