Hassan, famous for its renowned Hoysala period architectural marvels as well as UNESCO world heritage sites such as Belur and Halebedu, goes to polls on April 26 in the second phase of voting in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Voting began at 7 am across all seats in fray in Phase 2. By the time polling closed, a vote turnout of 72.13% was recorded in Hassan.

The city, which lies partly in the 'Malnad' tract and the southern plains, gave India its first Kannadiga Prime Minister — JD(S) stalwart HD Deve Gowda.

Voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, which has 28 parliamentary constituencies, happened in two phases. Fourteen of the 28 seats, including Hassan, vote in the second phase on Friday while the remaining 14 will cast their ballots in the third phase on May 7. The votes will be counted on June 4.

In Hassan, the almost four-decade-old political battle between two major influential families is in focus as Deve Gowda's grandson, Prajwal Revanna, is seeking re-election as the joint candidate of the BJP-JD(S) alliance. On the other hand is Deve Gowda's fierce opponent late G Puttaswamy Gowda's grandson Shreyas M Patel.

For the unversed, Puttaswamy Gowda competed with Deve Gowda of the erstwhile Janata Party for the first time in 1985 Assembly polls as an independent candidate, but lost. However, as a Congress candidate, he later went on to defeat Deve Gowda in the 1989 state elections and again in the 1999 general elections from the Hassan seat.

Deve Gowda has represented the Hassan seat in Parliament five times. In 2019, he made way for his grandson Prajwal, who as the joint candidate of Congress-JD(S) alliance won by over 1.4 lakh votes.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Patel is a former Hassan Zilla panchayat member and has reportedly been given a ticket by Congress based on his performance in Assembly polls.

The Hassan constituency at present has eight Assembly segments, out of which JD(S) holds four seats while the BJP and Congress hold two each.

In 2019, this constituency registered a total voter turnout of 77.35%.
