Apple

is expected to unveil a range of artificial intelligence (AI) features in the upcoming

iOS 18 update

, and the company is focusing on enhancing existing apps and services, according to a report from Apple Insider. The new features will be powered by

Apple's large language model

(LLM) called Ajax, which aims to provide practical benefits to users while preserving their privacy through on-device processing.

One of the key features expected in

iOS 18

is

Siri

's ability to analyse and summarise text messages within the Messages app. This feature will allow users to grasp the main points of lengthy conversations quickly without having to read through entire threads.

AI enhancements coming to Safari and Spotlight

In addition to the Messages app, Apple Insider reports that

Safari

will receive an "Intelligent Search" feature, enabling users to generate summaries of webpages. The company is also working on improving

Spotlight

Search with AI, making it more context-aware and capable of providing relevant information based on user queries.

Apple's

Ajax LLM

is said to be capable of generating simple responses entirely on-device, ensuring faster processing and better privacy protection. However, for more complex requests, the software may need to rely on server-side processing, which could potentially involve partnerships with Google or OpenAI.

According to Apple Insider, the company will display privacy warnings before Ajax accesses information from Safari or Messages, giving users control over their data.

If rumours are to be believed, Apple Music could also get an option to generate playlists using AI.

During a recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed confidence in the company's AI plans, stating that Apple has "advantages" that will differentiate its offerings from competitors. Cook highlighted Apple's "unwavering focus on privacy" as one of the key factors setting the company apart in the AI space.

While details about the specific AI features in iOS 18 remain scarce, we expect to learn more about Apple's plans during the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10.
