James Corden and Ruth Jones are said to feel that the "right decision" has been made over the return of Gavin and Stacey on the BBC, which was announced this week.

It was revealed on Friday that the beloved sitcom will return for its "finale" at Christmas, with it due to air on BBC One. The most recent episode of the BAFTA-winning show was a festive special that was broadcast on the channel in 2019.

The news comes following reports earlier this year that a "bidding war" was underway between the BBC and Netflix over a future episode of the show, which was created by James, 45, and Ruth, 57. The latter seemed to discuss the speculation at the time ahead of the announcement.

It's now been suggested that the pair, who play Smithy and Nessa respectively on the show, believe they have made the "right decision" by it returning to the BBC. All three series of Gavin and Stacey, and its two specials, have aired through the broadcaster since the show launched back in 2007.

A source has claimed to the Sun that the creators, who are also credited as writers on the show, "held conversations" with Netflix about the upcoming episode. It's however been said that "went with their hearts" by choosing the BBC.

The source told the outlet that the streaming platform "threw everything at them" to secure the episode, adding: "James, Ruth and the team were effectively offered a multi-million pound one-off deal, and were promised it would open the show up to a whole new international audience. Obviously it was tempting, but they felt Gavin and Stacey belonged to the BBC - and the nation, really."

They further commented: "The optics wouldn't have been great had they 'sold out' so they went with their hearts, not the cash." The source added that the team are "happy" that the "right decision" has been made for the new episode.

James announced that the show would return in a post on Instagram on Friday. He shared a black-and-white photo of himself and Ruth posing behind a script for the episode, which stated that it had been written by the pair and that it currently has the title 'Gavin and Stacey: the finale'.

He wrote in the accompanying caption: "Some news… It's official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey." And he went on to further tease: "See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

The BBC sitcom originally aired from 2007 to 2010, before returning for a one-off Christmas special in 2019. It ended on a cliffhanger with an unanswered proposal and fans had been hoping that the show would return at some point. There's now much excitement following the news that the show will return later this year for another episode.
