Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will need to have 'a meeting of minds' as King Charles and Princess Catherine battle cancer, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has said

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appear open to a reconciliation

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had to make a major compromise in order for the Duke of Sussex to meet his father, King Charles, following his cancer diagnosis, a royal commentator has claimed.

After the monarch's diagnosis was announced publicly in February, his younger son Harry rushed from the US to the UK to see Charles for around 30 minutes at Clarence House. The Duke is now set to travel to London again in days as he attends an event marking the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games and the King will clear his diary to meet him.

Harry's wife Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will not join him on the trip but commentators believe the Duke's reunion with his father will be a welcome olive branch following years of tensions and attacks on the Firm. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said it is "normal" for Harry to try and make amends with his family - and the fact that they have recently appointed new public relations experts is "significant".

According to Mr Fitzwilliams, Harry and Meghan have realised that their brand is "very important" and have changed the way they deal with PR. However, he said the pair now have to make amends with the royals and rebuild trust. The commentator said a key compromise the couple needed to agree on was a "meeting of minds" and the fact things need to be kept private and quiet due to serious illness within the family.

Mr Fitzwilliams told the Daily Mail: "There have been no attacks on the royal family recently, nor will there be for rather obvious reasons. The difficulty they now have is that they have to be trusted if they are going to build, or rebuild bridges, because I don't think members of the royal family will trust the Sussexes.

"The King has made clear his door is always open and obviously Harry is going to see quite a lot of him over the weeks and months ahead. When there is serious illness you have a situation where privately, quietly, which isn't the way the Sussexes do things normally, you have to have a meeting of minds."

While Harry is expected to meet King Charles next week, a reunion with his older brother Prince William is unlikely, according to royal experts. However, following Catherine's diagnosis, the Prince and Princess of Wales are said to be looking for a "truce" with Harry and Meghan for the sake of their three children.

An insider said Catherine is "done with all the bad blood" and is "willing" to talk to her brother-in-law, Harry. The source told Us Weekly that even though William and Harry "haven't spoken, there is potential for that" as they added: "[Harry] would be more than happy [to]."

The source said: "They want a relationship with Meghan and Harry, and they don't want the acrimony to carry over to the next generation. Obviously, the Duke and Duchess want their kids to have a relationship with their cousins."
