Tributes to 'incredible man' who 'helped so many of us'

The crossbench peer represented Birkenhead from 1979 until 2019 before entering the House of Lords in 2020. His family shared a statement today confirming he had died following a period of illness. They highlighted his work on child poverty, modern slavery and welfare reform.

Lord Field was often referred to as a "maverick" because of his independent-minded approach to politics. The ECHO's political editor, Liam Thorp spoke for many when he said: "Frank ploughed his own furrow and sometimes that upset people - but on issues of poverty, hunger and deprivation he was a titanic force for good."

On Facebook, ECHO readers expressed their admiration for Lord Field's willingness to work with other parties. ECHO reader Fiona Patterson-Cheek said: "He was a genuine, principled man, who stuck to what he believed, and was prepared to work with those that had different views."

Others highlighted the work he did for his constituents in Birkenhead. Jeanette Woods said: "Lovely man, helped so many people in Birkenhead."

Sarah Gillam said: "What an incredible man, he helped so many of us...Rest in peace sir." Williamina Edwards added: "RIP dear soul. Thank you for your service to Birkenhead."

Some people mentioned examples of how the former MP had helped them in the past. Writing on Twitter/X, a former constituent said: "He stepped in when I was wrongly issued hundreds of pounds of tax fines as a student, writing to the Head of HMRC and sorting it out. Whatever one thinks of his politics, he was a dedicated constituency MP who always responded to my emails and letters."

On Facebook, Kimmy Trevor said: "He did lot for my family even came to my house a few times...Genuine guy with big heart." In other tributes, ECHO readers emphasised Lord Field's decency and his lifetime of service.

Jacqueline Bowden said: "Rest in Peace Frank Field. Thank you for your service and dedication. British politics has lost one of its true and genuine politicians."

Barbara Almond said: "Such a genuine, respected and well loved man. It's a pity more politicians aren't like him. He earned so much respect from people what you saw was what you got, will be sadly missed. RIP."

Karen Titherington: "A truly principled, decent politician, rest in peace Frank."
