Joe Edwards gets 10 in Argyle player ratings from Hull win

Michael Cooper 8 - Was such a reassuring presence between the posts during this tense game. No mistakes could be made and Cooper never looked like making one, either when making saves, dealing with crosses or with his distribution of the ball. His injury problems of the past 15 months now seem to be well behind him.

Ashley Phillips 8 - This was a high pressure occasion for an 18-year-old but the loan signing Tottenham Hotspur was up to the challenge. Importantly, Phillips made sure to be decisive with all of his defending and, if in doubt, he made sure to clear his lines and then ask questions.

Dan Scarr 8 - Was frozen out by Ian Foster during his short time at the club but started all six of the games after the head coach was sacked and his strong defensive displays were a big reason why Argyle were able to pick up 10 points from those matches and see themselves to safety.

Lewis Gibson 8 - Completed an excellent first season at Argyle with the latest in a long line of very assured performances. He is the exactly the sort of player with room for further improvement the Pilgrims need to build around if they are to establish themselves in the Championship going forward.

Joe Edwards 10 STAR MAN - I know, 10, but I think in the circumstances it is more than merited for Argyle's Captain Fantastic. Talk about leading by example, he was absolutely everywhere and played like a man possessed. There was no way he was letting the Pilgrims get relegated, and his back post headed goal in the 40th minute made sure they will still be in the Championship next season.

Adam Randell 7 - What a proud moment it must have been for the Argyle academy product to play his part in his hometown club retaining their Championship status for the 2024/25 season.

Alfie Devine 8 - Was brought back into the starting line-up for the first time since he was sent-off in the 1-0 Easter Monday home defeat by Bristol City but it was a decision which paid off for Argyle as the 19-year-old Tottenham Hotspur loan signing gave them a good attacking force and ball retention from central midfield.

Bali Mumba 9 - One of his very best performances of the season and it came in the same left wing-back role in which he starred for Argyle during their 2022/23 League One title success. Mumba has been used in different positions during the course of this season but this appears to be the best spot to play him. His dynamism is infectious, both among his team-mates and the Green Army as well.

Morgan Whittaker 7 - This could have been his last game for Argyle at Home Park with the 23-year-old bound to be a transfer target for clubs this summer. Whittaker has not been at his best in recent weeks, and it was the same again this time, as he gave the ball away too easily at times. He did have some decent scoring chances, the best of which came in the first half when his left-foot shot from a central position in the Hull penalty area was superbly saved by Ryan Allsop.

Mustapha Bundu 7 - Made some strong runs down the left as he linked up well with Bali Mumba, although he over-did things at times. Had to be substituted late in the first half after appearing to suffer a hamstring injury.

Ryan Hardie 7 - Back in the team after being rested for the 1-0 defeat at Millwall in the previous match. Had good claims for a penalty in the first half after a challenge from behind but referee Darren Bond thought otherwise. He could not get on the scoresheet but he has put in a superb shift this term and hopefully Argyle will have more attacking options in their squad next season so they are not so reliant on him.

SUBSTITUTES

Callum Wright 7 - Had only been on the pitch for a very short while as the substitute for Mustapha Bundu when he put in a tremendous cross from which Joe Edwards scored what turned out to be the crucial winning goal. The pair almost linked up again in similar style in the second half but this time the Argyle captain was just beaten to the ball by a Hull opponent.

Ben Waine - As so often this season, the New Zealand international was a late replacement for the hard-working Ryan Hardie, on this occasion the change being made in the 78th minute.

Adam Forshaw - Provided some invaluable experience so Argyle could see the game out when he was sent on for Alfie Devine in the 83rd minute.

Brendan Galloway - Argyle needed to stay strong defensively in the closing stages and Galloway was called upon to take over from the more attack-minded Bali Mumba at left wing-back in the 83rd minute.
