A gardening guru has a crucial seedling task for "early May" ahead of the summer bloom.

May usually brings a burst of warmer weather that leads eager gardeners to roll up their sleeves and prime their patches ahead of the summer season.

As each new month dawns, it brings with it a fresh set of gardening chores that are pivotal for the month of May.

Among these tasks is one particularly vital for any seedlings you might be nurturing, and it's a key step in gearing them up for the sunny season ahead.

Sophie, a horticultural virtuoso better known to her TikTok followers as @lookinsidemygarden, has pinpointed the start of May as the perfect time to engage in several critical gardening activities to ensure a verdant and flourishing garden by summertime.

With an impressive fanbase of over 17,000 on her TikTok account, Sophie underscored some of the top tasks that plant enthusiasts should tackle this month.

For those with seedlings sprouting in their gardens, Sophie's advice could be a game-changer, setting the stage for your plants to thrive in the coming months, reports the Daily Record.

She advised that for seedlings growing under the protection of a greenhouse, now is the moment to consider hardening them off and transitioning them outdoors.

This gradual process will acclimatise them to the elements, like wind and sunlight, which they've been shielded from indoors.

Sophie explained: "You'll see that the stems get nice and strong, ready to be planted out. This can be done over a period of a few weeks."

For those tender seedlings not yet ready to brave the outdoors, the key is consistent watering.

Sophie advised: "You can give them a bit of a feed, thin out, pot on and get them ready to be planted out.

"I've got a lot of thinning out to do but you just have to prioritise it. Do what you can manage and don't feel overwhelmed. It's also a great time to cull too many seedlings."

For feeding your burgeoning plants, Sophie swears by tomato food as a "great all-rounder".

Wrapping up her green-fingered guidance, Sophie suggested that early May is the perfect window for seeding your lawn if you haven't already.

Showing her own garden, she revealed: "We sowed this about four weeks ago but you've still got time."
