With its sleek glass bottle, expensive-looking label and steep price tag, you could easily mistake it for fine chardonnay. But these days, that premium product in your supermarket shop is often olive oil, which — thanks to drought, climate change and a disease affecting olive trees in Italy — is now more than double the price it was in 2022.

Costs have risen by 47.4 per cent in the past 12 months leading to the nickname "liquid gold". A 500ml bottle of market leader Filippo Berio's extra virgin olive oil will set you back £8.55 at Tesco, with the same-size own brand bottle costing £6.50.
