Mexican authorities hunting for two Australian brothers and their American travel companion who vanished during a surfing and camping holiday have confirmed the discovery of three bodies.

A land and sea search was launched almost a week ago for three American and Australian surfers who vanished from their tents in Mexico's Baja California peninsula, with fears that they had been caught up in drug cartel violence plaguing the state.

The Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson — a 30-year-old doctor and a 33-year-old professional lacrosse player — were on a camping and surfing trip with an American, Jack Carter Rhoad, 30.

They were last seen on April 27, and the alarm was raised when they failed to turn up at an Airbnb rental property in
