The wife of a Californian doctor who drove his family off a 300ft cliff has pleaded with a judge not to send him to prison.

Neha Patel's husband, Dharmesh, 43, has been charged with attempting to murder his wife and their two children. Prosecutors said he intentionally drove the Tesla Model Y off a cliff face on the Pacific Coast Highway 15 miles south of San Francisco.

The couple and their daughter, now eight, suffered serious injuries in the crash in January last year. Their son, now five, was unharmed. Emergency services had to use a helicopter to reach the wrecked car which plunged off the highway at Devil's Slide, a notorious crash blackspot.

Patel, a radiologist from Pasadena, Los Angeles, has pleaded not guilty
