Planning on flying outside of Arizona in 2025? You'll have one year to get the state-issued driver's license or identification renewed for travel compliance, according to a recent statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

The deadline was issued by the Real ID Act, which states that anyone who has not upgraded their driver's license or ID to be "Real ID compliant" will not be able to board federally regulated commercial aircraft, access federal government facilities or military installations or enter nuclear power plants after May 7, 2025.

The act was passed by Congress in 2005 and is meant to set higher security standards for IDs across the nation, but the deadline for meeting compliance was pushed back three times from the original 2020 deadline before arriving at the 2025 deadline approaching now.

Here's what to know.

Do I need an Arizona Travel ID?

If you plan to travel domestically next year, it's not necessary to obtain a Travel ID to get through TSA checkpoints if you have other identification that TSA accepts, like a U.S. passport.

However, a Travel ID will be necessary for travelers without another form of federally compliant identification or for anyone that needs access to federal facilities, military installations or nuclear power plants.

How do I get an Arizona Travel ID or renew my current ID?

Upgrading a standard, non-Travel ID to a federally compliant Travel ID can be done at any Arizona Motor Vehicle Department location. A new Travel ID is good for eight years and costs $25.

The Travel ID is available both as a driver's license and as an identification card and includes a gold star embedded on the upper right hand corner to signify the cardholder has met the federal identification requirements.

The MVD office accepts walk-ins, but encourages scheduling an appointment at azmvdnow.gov. Additional documentation is required to obtain a Travel ID, including a birth certificate or U.S. passport, social security number and two documents proving Arizona residency.

Travel IDs cannot be used to travel internationally.
